The Cricket Match

February 2004.

We arrived at Nyanga CC followed by an increasing number of local School children. The chant of “The VCC, The VCC” rung out led by Jonty and the school children. The immediate impact was to see the two grazing sheep at square leg leave promptly. Surprisingly we won the toss and elected to bowl.

Our opening bowlers, Deano and Bear, now sporting a new township haircut, did some damage with Bear removing their opener for little runs but Nyanga pressed on and were soon past 50 without further loss. Walkden, and “The Don” enjoyed the sight of wickets falling off their admirable bowling but Nyanga were plundering runs to all parts of the township.

“The Cobra” tried his skills of putting the opposition into a spin but with Nyanga well past 200, clearly the events of a late night before had got the better of The VCC bowling attack.

An exceptional tea was taken having been prepared by the home team and then it was time for The VCC to take to the task of hunting down 200 plus to win.

Hooper - our lead batsman for many a year failed as he had done much on tour longing for his new love, left way back in the UK. “The Don” hit some lofty blows. Jonty, the skipper himself failed which set the trend with only the original founder of the club Chris “Skip” Williamson maintaining The VCC’s dignity with a sparkling 64 - he had been in bed by 10pm the night before.

Nyanga CC had their victory but for us all it was the undoubted highlight of the 2004 tour with many new friends made at Nyanga and Gugulethu.
